Talk about boundaries and consent

Discuss what is welcome, what is not, and how either person can change their mind.

Make the conversation concrete

Ask which topics the other person is comfortable discussing now and which they prefer to leave aside. Say what you want in equally direct terms. “I am happy to talk, but I do not want to exchange personal photos” communicates a clear boundary without requiring a personal explanation.

Avoid assumptions

A role label, past experience or earlier agreement does not replace a current decision. Consent needs to be freely given and can be withdrawn. Silence, uncertainty or pressure is not a reason to continue. If the answer is unclear, stop and clarify rather than interpret it in your favour.

Respond to a change respectfully

Someone may change their mind after a friendly conversation or after making plans. Accept the change without demanding compensation, proof or a debate. You can also revise your own boundaries. This guide concerns communication; it does not provide instructions for physical restraint or make any activity risk-free.
