Send a first message that invites conversation
A relevant question gives the other person room to respond in their own way.
Start with something specific
Mention a non-sensitive detail from the profile and ask one easy question. For example: “You mentioned live music. What kind of show do you enjoy?†A greeting that shows you read the profile is more useful than a long message copied to everyone.
Ask before changing the tone
A dating profile is not permission to send explicit material or to assign someone a role. If you want to discuss a more personal topic, ask first and accept a refusal without bargaining. Keep the first exchange at a level both people have actively welcomed.
Give replies time
People use dating sites at different speeds. One unanswered message does not require repeated reminders or contact through another channel. If someone declines, acknowledge it briefly and move on. The aim is a conversation both people choose, not a reply obtained through persistence.
